Container ports worldwide are facing numerous challenges: ultra-large container ships need new, efficient concepts for faster loading and unloading. Higher container volumes demand significantly more warehouse capacity and at the same time more terminal space. The productivity and cost-effectiveness of all operating procedures are important indicators in global competition.
THE CONCEPT
AMOVA has developed an automated storage solution for the handling of ISO containers in container ports. The system consists of an automatic high-bay warehouse with 11 storage levels and direct links to waterside and landside loading.
THE BENEFITS
The storage system offers maximum space utilisation of up to 3,000 standard containers per hectare with all the benefits of a fully-automated operation, such as energy saving and occupational safety. The system also supports all the necessary interfaces for intermodal transport – rail / road / barge.
THE JOINT VENTURE BOXBAY
TOC Europe 2019 in Rotterdam (18-21 June 2019). - The future is vertical - with this slogan the newly founded joint venture BOXBAY sets itself a high goal: to revolutionize the handling and storage of containers in ports worldwide. BOXBAY, a joint venture between the global port operator DP World and the international plant manufacturer SMS group/AMOVA, will install a pilot HBS system in Jebel Ali Terminal 4 by October next year, in time for Expo 2020 in Dubai. The full expansion will then begin after the end of the World Expo.
AMOVA GmbH has successfully transferred its decades of expertise in the field of fully automatic high-bay storage systems (HBS) for heavy loads to new applications and industries: on the one hand to the storage of air freight under the brand name ACUNIS, on the other hand to port logistics.
For the new joint venture BOXBAY, AMOVA and DP World, one of the world's largest terminal operators, have joined forces to develop a completely new concept for the operation of container terminals. The first construction phase of the new terminal in Jebel Ali based on high-bay warehouse technology will go into operation in summer 2020 and will be presented at the World Expo in Dubai from October 2020.
TOC Europe in Rotterdam now offered the perfect platform to officially announce the start of the joint venture and the pioneering contract for Jebel Ali Terminal 4. In this context, the BOXBAY high-bay storage system was presented to the public in detail. The concept supports a great variety of applications that can benefit from the essential advantages such as maximum storage capacity per area, high throughput and excellent operating efficiency. The BOXBAY booth was well attended every day, and technical presentations including Q&A sessions left a solid impression on the trade audience: The future is vertical!
